During her statement, at HELMEPA Conference “Sustainable Shipping I Getting Onboard To Save The Oceans”, at Posidonia 2022, the President of the UGS, Ms. Melina Travlos, mentioned:

“We, as members of the Union of Greek Shipowners are active members of HELMEPA. We are one and the same and share a common bond in our values and our love for the sea. We have and must continue to collaborate closely in order to achieve the highest standards within our industry.

Volunteering is invaluable and right at the heart of the DNA of the Union of Greek Shipowners. In our DNA also lies the adoption of sustainable policies, which can help develop shipping, within the context of environmental protection!”

The President, Ms. Melina Travlos and the Μembers of the BoD of the UGS met today the delegation of the Bahamas Maritime Authority. Since Greek-controlled ships are a significant part of the total Bahamas-flagged fleet, both sides agreed on the need to strengthen their collaboration, especially at the IMO level.

The goal of decarbonization of shipping is a common goal for both sides, especially due to the fact that Bahamas is interested, not only as a shipping state, but also as a Small Developing Island State (SIDS), which is significantly affected by climate change.

The President, Ms. Melina Travlos and the Μembers of the BoD of the UGS met today with the leadership of Rightship, a third-party vetting company assessing the safety and environmental performance of bulk carriers.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain an open dialogue on matters of common interest. Special mention was made to the methodology used by Rightship, with the UGS representatives stressing the need of alignment with IMO and Classification Societies standards.

The President, Ms. Melina Travlos and the Μembers of the BoD of the UGS met today with the Chairman, Mr. Nick Brown and the Secretary General, Mr. Robert Ashdown of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

The UGS highlighted the important role of Classification Societies acting as Recognized Organizations on behalf of flag Administrations, stressed the need for the shipping industry views to be taken into account in the work of IACS, both when developing regulations and when acting as the principal technical advisor to the IMO.

The President, Ms. Melina Travlos and the Μembers of the BoD of the UGS received the delegation of BIMCO, Mr. Nicholas H. Schües, President Designate, Ms. Şadan Kaptanoğlu, Immediate Past President, Mr. David Loosley, Secretary General / CEO and Mr. Lars Robert Pedersen, Deputy Secretary General, at the UGS premises in Piraeus.

The discussion evolved mainly around issues where the work of BIMCO is particularly important for the shipping sector, such as the update of draft contracts and clauses according to recent regulatory developments. Both sides confirmed their willingness to continue their close cooperation.

The President, Ms. Melina Travlos and the Μembers of the BoD of the UGS met today with the leadership of Baltic Exchange, the organization providing freight market information, at the Union’s premises.

Apart from highlighting its role in the shipping industry, the UGS representatives welcomed the recent involvement of the Baltic Exchange in the decarbonization agenda, stressing the need of its approach being aligned with IMO standards and regulations.

The President, Ms. Melina Travlos and the Μembers of the BoD of the UGS, had a meeting today, on the occasion of the international shipping exhibition Posidonia 2022, with senior officials of the marine engine manufacturer MAN.

The discussion focused on issues regarding the decarbonizing of shipping, as engine manufacturers are one of the major stakeholders, together with shipyards and fuel producers and suppliers, with a key role to play in developing new technologies.
